Harry and Meghan sent shockwaves through the monarchy in January 2020 by suddenly announcing they were splitting from the family and embarking on a new future across the Atlantic - one of the most extraordinary royal exits in decades.

That split has now been formalised after discussions with the 94-year-old Queen Elizabeth.
The confirmation means Prince Harry and Meghan will return their honorary military appointments and royal patronages, which will be redistributed to working members of the Royal Family.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.
"While all are saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family."
据CNN报道，哈里梅根仍将保留“苏塞克斯公爵和公爵夫人”这一官方头衔，哈里仍然是王位第六顺位继承人。
The pair will retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, and Prince Harry is still sixth in line to the British throne.

A spokesman for Harry and Meghan said: "As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role."
They added: "We can all live a life of service. Service is universal."
此外，据CNN报道，哈里梅根将于3月7日与奥普拉进行一场重磅采访，这也是两人离开伦敦前往北美后首次正式坐下接受采访。

Harry and Meghan are due to join Oprah Winfrey for a major interview on March 7 — their first sit-down appearance since leaving London for North America.
As long as the couple represented the Queen, they were always limited in what they were able to say publicly. Now it's been announced that they will not be returning as working royals, they will be able to speak more freely in the interview.
