British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday he had no intention of resigning over a series of lockdown-breaking gatherings at his Downing Street office and residence, pledging to get on with the job.
Asked by the opposition Labour Party Keir Starmer leader if the ministerial code, which says that ministers who had knowingly misled parliament should offer to resign, applied to him Johnson said: "Of course."
"If he'd misled parliament, he must resign," Starmer told parliament. "Will you now resign?" "No," Johnson replied.
When Ian Blackford, leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), asked Johnson when he would "cop on" and "go," the prime minister said "I have absolutely no intention of doing what he suggests."
British police said Tuesday they are investigating alleged parties held at Downing Street and Whitehall over the past two years during the country's lockdown, citing "deep public concern." "I can confirm that the Met (Metropolitan Police) is now investigating a number of events that took place at Downing Street and Whitehall in the last two years in relation to potential breaches of COVID-19 regulations," London's Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said.
Johnson said he could not speak about investigations into the alleged parties. Johnson said his government was focused on driving economic growth and leading the Western response to the Ukraine crisis.
Johnson has given a variety of explanations about the parties: first he said no rules had been broken but then he apologised to the British people.
It's unclear how the Met's investigation will impact on the report, widely expected to be released sometime this week, by Sue Gray, the senior civil servant tasked with investigating these alleged parties at Downing Street.
This week’s PMQs was less rowdy than last week, and despite everything that is happening, it seemed to only show that the partisan trenches are being dug ever deeper. And it’s now clear that UK politics is essentially on hold until we finally get to see this report.
About two-thirds (62%) of British adults say Boris Johnson should resign as Prime Minister, according to a Survation poll released Wednesday.
