Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter over the death of George Floyd, the judge presiding over the high-profile trial announced Tuesday, reading the jury's verdict. Right after judge Peter Cahill announced the verdict, which came after the 12-member jury was sequestered Monday afternoon and deliberated for about 10 hours, Chauvin, who listened in the courtroom, was handcuffed and taken into custody by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday called the murder conviction of former Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd a "step forward," but said such a verdict was much too rare in a country plagued by systemic racism. "This can be a giant step forward in the march toward justice in America," Biden said in remarks from the White House.

"I can't breathe. Those were George Floyd's last words," Biden said, evoking the final utterance of the man Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering. "We can't let those words die with him. We have to keep hearing those words. We must not turn away. We can't turn away."

"This can be a moment of significant change," he concluded.

Cahill revoked Chauvin's bail after the conviction and said the defendant will be sentenced "eight weeks from now." Between now and the day when the sentencing is announced, according to Cahill, the court would look at written arguments from Chauvin "within one week" and issue factual findings on it, according to Cahill.

"This case is exactly what you thought when you saw it first, when you saw that video. It is exactly that. You can believe your eyes," prosecuting attorney Steve Schleicher said in closing arguments. "This wasn't policing. This was murder."

Defense attorney Eric Nelson argued that Chauvin's use of force was reasonable, that he was distracted by hostile bystanders and that Floyd died of other causes.

Since Chauvin has no previous criminal record, he would avoid the maximum sentence for each of the three charges, which is 40 years for second-degree murder, 25 years for third-degree murder, and 10 years for second-degree manslaughter. Minnesota's sentencing guidelines recommend about 12.5 years in prison for each murder charge and about four years for the manslaughter charge.
