The murder trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin charged with killing African American George Floyd in late May last year officially got underway in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday.

Ahead of opening statements in the trial, members of George Floyd's family and their legal team knelt in front of a Minneapolis courthouse for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the duration that video taken from the scene showed Chauvin had knelt on Floyd's neck while the 46-year-old black father was handcuffed, pinned to the pavement, and pled that he could not breathe. The video went viral and sparked weeks-long nationwide protests for racial justice last year.

据CNN报道，美国非裔民权运动领袖阿尔•沙普顿称，长跪8分46秒是希望人们在过程中思考，“为什么肖万在这段时间内都不曾抬起他的膝盖。”
"We are taking a knee for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, and we want you to think of during that time, why Chauvin didn't, in that time get his knee up?" Al Sharpton said.

"Today starts a landmark trial that will be a referendum on how far America has come on its quest for equality and justice for all," civil rights attorney Ben Crump said outside the courthouse on Monday." This murder case is not hard, just look at the torture video of George Floyd," said Crump.

The trial is expected to last several weeks.

开庭后，检方律师杰里•布莱克韦尔先进行了约1个小时的案情陈述。其间，他向法庭播放了明尼阿波利斯市前警官肖万去年5月25日在执法过程的视频。
布莱克韦尔认为，肖万在弗洛伊德已被制服的情况下仍对其使用“过度且不合理（excessive and unreasonable force）”的措施，弗洛伊德之死是一起谋杀。

被告辩护律师埃里克•内尔松认为，弗洛伊德并非遭肖万长时间跪压致死，而是与其过量服药及患有心脏病、高血压等基础疾病有关。同时，由于肖万在体重上处于明显劣势，其跪压行为不能被视作过度执法。
Chauvin's attorneys argued that Floyd resisted arrest and had drugs in his system when he was being arrested, which they argue could have reasonably led to his death.
当天，安排肖万出警的报警中心调度员和两名现场目击者作为检方证人也出席了庭审，并分别作证。
检方以二级谋杀、三级谋杀和二级过失杀人等罪名指控肖万。肖万未对任何指控认罪。
Chauvin is facing charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
