Convening his first formal news conference Thursday, U.S President Joe Biden stepped into a swirl of issues that have bubbled up at the two-month mark of his presidency.
Only 40 reporters were permitted in the East Room for the news conference because of COVID-19 restrictions; all wore face masks and were seated apart. Biden entered the room wearing a mask and took it off to answer questions.
Biden on Thursday announced a new goal of having 200 million Covid vaccination shots being distributed within his first 100 days in office. 100 million coronavirus vaccinations had been given since Biden was inaugurated. That benchmark — which Biden set as his original target Dec. 8 — was reached on his 59th day in office.
“I believe we can do it,” Biden said.
During President Joe Biden's first solo press conference since taking office in January, not a single reporter asked a question about the coronavirus pandemic — a notable omission as the country continues to see tens of thousands of new cases each day.
"My plan is to run for reelection, that's my expectation," said Biden, who at age 78 is the oldest U.S. president when assuming office. Biden also said if he does run again, he expects Vice President Kamala Harris to be his running mate.
Former U.S. President Trump had announced his plans for reelection soon after starting his first term.
拜登在回答有关美中关系的提问时表示，尽管两国会有激烈竞争（steep competition），但美国不寻求与中国对抗（not looking for confrontation）。
“China has an overall goal, and I don’t criticize them for the goal, but they have an overall goal to become the leading country in the world, the wealthiest country in the world, and the most powerful country in the world. That’s not going to happen on my watch because the United States are going to continue to grow and expand.”
As for China's development goal, we have our goal very clear. Our goal is to meet the growing aspiration of the Chinese people for a better life. Our goal is not to compete with or replace any other country. This is never our national strategy.
