Dozens of documentaries have shown the fight against COVID-19 in Wuhan. But Long Time No See, Wuhan by Japanese director Ryo Takeuchi, 41, has gained about 500,000 views on the video platform Bilibili and has drawn a lot of attention in both China and Japan.
Even Zhao Lijian, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, praised it in a news conference. “This documentary is very touching as it shows people’s lives in a plain, sincere and heartwarming way,” Zhao said.
It presents the real lives of 10 ordinary families in Wuhan after the city lifted the lockdown. On Aug 28, Takeuchi was invited to the Beijing International Film Festival to share experience of making documentaries.
He told TEENS that Zhao’s remarks surprised him and his team. “It was a great honor for us,” Takeuchi said. His original intention was “to help foreigners overcome their prejudice of Wuhan” since there were biased remarks and reports. He interviewed ordinary people, including a restaurant owner, a middle school teacher and others.
Takeuchi has lived in Nanjing, Jiangsu, for seven years. This is not the first time that he has fought against prejudice. Since 2015, he has been filming the documentary series The Reason I Live Here. In the documentary series, he interviewed many Japanese people living in China and Chinese people who have settled in Japan, asking them the reasons why they have lived in these countries.
He told TEENS that he wanted to promote understanding among people in the two nations. “That’s the key reason why I live in China,” he said. He plans to shoot a documentary about China’s poverty alleviation in the Daliang Mountains, Sichuan.
