Disney released the first teaser trailer for its live-action take on The Little Mermaid over the weekend. But its release has reignited a racist backlash online, which first surfaced in 2019 following news of Bailey's casting, from some people who expressed their displeasure at making the film's leading character Black.
In the original animated film, released in 1989, Ariel, a fictional mermaid, is depicted as a white, red-haired woman.
有不满意选角的网友认为，角色不符合自己的“童年记忆”：
“讨论谁更像爱丽儿不是种族歧视……何况30多年来，小美人鱼爱丽儿一直都是这样的人设。”

不过，也有不少外国网友支持迪士尼的选角，并驳斥了持反对观点的人。
“当白人拍关于非洲和埃及的电影，却使用白人演员时，怎么没看到你们跳脚？反过来就成了大问题了。”

有网友指出，说真人版不尊重原版很可笑，因为迪士尼动画就与《小美人鱼》原著有很大差别。
“安徒生在1837年创作了《小美人鱼》原著，它不是‘民间故事’或神话。原著中小美人鱼的皮肤被描述为半透明的绿色。她的发色从未被提及。她每走一步都痛苦万分，王子把她当宠物一样对待，最后娶了另一个女人。”

另据NBC报道，真人版预告公布后，国外社交媒体上，有不少非裔家长分享了自己孩子第一次观看预告片时的反应。视频中，这些孩子们看到新版小美人鱼出现，都十分开心激动。
在一个视频中，小女孩的兴奋之情溢于言表，激动地喊道：“她是黑人！”

"Mommy!" a little girl says in a video posted by TikTok user. "She's brown like me!"
In one of the reaction videos posted by TikTok user, a toddler named Emery lounges on the couch but sits up when Bailey appears on screen. "I think she's brown!" a beaming Emery says in the video. "Brown Ariel is cute."

In a recent interview with Variety, Bailey addressed the racism she faced, describing her grandparents’ encouragement.
“It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you,’” she said they told her.

Bailey claimed that she didn't "pay attention to the negativity," instead focusing on gratitude as a way to ignore the backlash. "I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they're special, and that they should be a princess in every single way," she said.
