Zheng, a 24-year-old graduate of the university's statistics master's program, was fatally shot on Tuesday, Nov. 9, on the University of Chicago campus just before 2 p.m. CT, according to the Chicago Police Department.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown announced on Nov 12 that Alton Spann, 18, has been charged with first degree murder, armed robbery and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon in Zheng's death.
After allegedly committing armed robbery and murder, police said Spann pawned his victim's stolen electronics for just $100.

Following the shooting of Zheng, students quickly banded together with help from local activists and student groups to come up with a list of demands for the university and to organize the rally.
Da Teng, a 23-year-old doctoral chemistry student, said that Chinese people in America are traditionally known for being more politically inactive. “But we really want to be heard this time,” he said.
Teng said he can no longer tell students back in China that it is safe to study in Chicago.
“The next one to be shot could be anyone in this crowd,” Teng said. “We need actions right now to stop the violence.”

Zheng is the third U. of C. student or recent graduate fatally shot this year in Chicago.
Back in January, 30-year-old Ph.D. student Yiran Fan, 30, was shot and killed when Jason Nightengale went on a killing spree from the South Side of Chicago to Evanston.
In July, 20-year-old Max Lewis died three days after he was fatally struck by a stray bullet while riding on the Green Line.
Spokespeople for the university said they have increased University of Chicago police patrols and are working with city officials on safety strategies.
They also said late Tuesday that they will have an update for students to talk about safety issues with staff soon.
