Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s claim that the U.S. supply chain was only strained because of President Joe Biden's success in guiding the country out of a recession raised plenty of eyebrows.

The U.S. supply chain crisis has affected Americans of all stripes. Yet, Buttigieg told CNN last Sunday that the reason the supply chain is dealing with backlogs is because demand and income are up under Biden.

“The demand is off the charts, retail sales are through the roof…Now every one of those ships is full of record amounts of goods that Americans are buying.”

"Demand is up," Buttigieg said, "because income is up, because the president has successfully guided this economy out of the teeth of a terrifying recession."

The secretary also predicted the holidays "are going to be a lot better this year."

"Because a year ago millions of Americans were sliding into poverty who now have jobs," Buttigieg said. "And a year ago, a lot of us were gathering with loved ones over a screen."

However, he admitted supply chain disruptions will "continue into next year."

After years of declines, America’s middle class now holds a smaller share of U.S. wealth than the top 1%.

The middle 60% of U.S. households by income -- a measure economists often use as a definition of the middle class -- saw their combined assets drop to 26.6% of national wealth as of June, the lowest in Federal Reserve data going back three decades. For the first time, the super rich had a bigger share, at 27%.
