"While I am at the White House working, you are out there partying tonight. But I don't blame you. Enjoy yourselves. We are gonna have a great year. Have a really really happy new year!"
I'm standing at the colonnade of the White House right next to the Oval Office and I just want to wish you a very, very happy new year.
It's going to be a great year, complicated but great. People make it overly complicated actually. But I will tell you there has never been an administration. We are very proud of this. That's done more than the Trump administration in the first two years of office.
Our economy is doing great. Wages are rising for the first time in many, many year. People are getting more money. They're working one job instead of two or three. Also, we're woking on new trade deals. We made a deal with Mexico. We made a deal with Canda. We made that deal with South Korea. Everybody said that couldn't happen.
We terminated the horrible one-sided Iran nuclear deal. Then you look at North Korea. We're doing really well. Rockets aren't being fired. Missiles aren't being fired. We're in no rush. We moved our embassy to Jerusalem in Isael. I promised it and I did it. We're doing so well.
As a country we need, however, borders. You don't have borders, you don't have a country. We don't want drug traffickers or human traffickers or illegal people with criminal records to come in. Our Border Patrol, our ice agents, our military, we've done great. But you can never do it perfectly unless you have a wall. So we have to have a wall as part of border security and we're working on it.
We've had a great two years. I'm working hard for you. I'm fighting for you. We're gonna win. We're gonna win all the way. We're gonna win it everything we do.
So Happy New Year and let's enjoy the next year and then we're going to enjoy the following year and then we have four more and everything is going to be so beautiful.
Thank you very much. Have a fantastic new year.
New Year is a time to look ahead and in 2019 the UK will start a new chapter. The Brexit deal I have negotiated delivers on the vote of the British people. It gives us control over our borders, our money and our laws. It is good for jobs, protects our security and works for our whole United Kingdom. In the next few weeks MPs will have an important decision to make. If Parliament backs a deal, Britain can turn a corner.
The referendum in 2016 was divisive but we all want the best for our country and 2019 can be the year we put our differences aside and move forward together, into a strong new relationship with our European neighbours and out into the world as a globally trading nation.
Important though Brexit is, it is not the only issue that counts. When each of us looks back on 2019, it will be the personal milestones that stand out. Starting a new school, college or apprenticeship. Getting a job, starting a business, earning a pay rise. Buying a house, getting married or starting a family. These are the things that matter most and by agreeing a good Brexit deal, we can focus our energy on those things – strengthening our economy and opening up new markets for our businesses to create new jobs and opportunities across the UK; building the housing our country needs so everyone can have a home of their own and transforming technical education so everyone gains the skills they need to get on. Our long term plan for the NHS will put a record investment into our most precious public service so it is there for us when we need it. We will introduce a new skills based immigration system to replace freedom of movement, and by protecting and enhancing our natural environment, we will make Britain a healthier place.
This year the UK has achieved a lot. The employment rate is at a record high, our debt is starting its first sustained fall in a generation and the number of people in absolute poverty is at a record low. But a New Year means new potential to do even more, to ensure that everyone in every community can feel the benefit. Together I believe we can start a new chapter with optimism and hope. We have all we need to thrive and if we come together in 2019, I know we can make a success of what lies ahead and build a country that truly works for every one of us.
